The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for Wales. The announcement for Monday comes after a warm and pleasant weekend with highs of 25°C in some parts of the country on Sunday.

The yellow weather warning affects the whole of Wales as well as parts of the Midlands, south west England, south east England Cheshire, Northamptonshire and London. The warning states: “Scattered thunderstorms could lead to some flooding and disruption in places on Monday.” It is in place on Monday May 12 from 12pm until 10pm.

The Met Office website states: “Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Monday afternoon.

“Whilst these will be fairly fast-moving, rain may be intense for short periods of time and produce 20-30 mm in less than an hour, with 40-50mm within one to two hours in one or two places where thunderstorms grow larger.

“Lightning, hail and gusty winds will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will ease through the evening.”

The warning means sudden flooding should be expected, along with difficult driving conditions, the Met Office states.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus service.

There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

The Met Office weather forecast for Wales on Monday further states: “A warm day with sunny periods developing through the morning.

“These may allow heavy downpours and thunderstorms to develop by the afternoon. Gusty winds in any thunderstorms. Maximum temperature 23°C.”

The outlook for Tuesday to Thursday in Wales says: “Isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms on Tuesday, but dry and sunny for most.

“Remaining settled thereafter, feeling very warm in the sunshine but nights trending cooler again.”
