Met Office warns of ‘heavy rain and thunder’ as cold front pushes north across the UK

It comes as the UK is expected to be warmer than Barcelona at the weekend

As the UK experiences its first spring-like weather of 2025, the Met Office has now warned that parts of the country could see “heavy rain and thunder” from tonight, March 6.

The Met Office has taken to social media to warn Brits not to put their raincoats away just yet. Starting on Thursday evening, March 6, a cold front will blow in from the Atlantic Ocean at the west of the UK, sweeping across the country in a north-easterly direction.

The Met Office took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to warn of the wet and stormy weather. The UK weather agency wrote: “Many across England and Wales have been able to put the raincoats away recently, but some will need to dig them out again tomorrow.

“A cold front swinging across the UK will bring spells of rain, heavy and possibly thundery at times These will push north during the day”

Greater Manchester could see heavy rain during the evening on Thursday, with heavier rain and even thunder throughout the night. Describing the weather in the North West of England on Thursday evening, The Met Office said: “Cloud continues to spread from the west, bringing bands of showery rain, heavy and possibly thundery at times.

“Otherwise a mild night to come with light winds. Minimum temperature 8C.”

The whole of Friday, March 6, is expected to be grey and rainy in Greater Manchester, with the chance of precipitation reaching 80% at 2 am, 4 am and 7 am. Temperatures will remain mind with highs of 13C and lows of 10C.

The weather forecast for the North West of England for Friday reads: “Mainly cloudy with scattered showers spreading slowly northwards, these heavy at times. Light winds and staying mild, despite the rain and cloud. Temperatures well above the early-March average. Maximum temperature 13 °C.”

It comes after parts of the UK have been forecast to be warmer than European holiday destinations including Barcelona and Tenerife on Saturday, March 8, as temperatures in Greater Manchester are set to peak at 17C with sunshine all day.

The Met Office has also warned that after the weekend, temperatures are expected to drop to below average, with a maximum temperature of just 7C by next Wednesday, March 12, which is almost 10C drop from the weekend.
