The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice in parts of England with forecasters warning that icy patches are expected to form on untreated surfaces from midnight
The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning for certain regions in England, effective from 3am to 9am on Thursday.
The weather experts advise: ” Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads, which are likely to be less slippery.
Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads, which are more likely to have been treated.”
They also suggest: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change: the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
The areas affected include:
- East Midlands
- North East England
- North West England
- Yorkshire and Humber
The forecaster predicts that the chilly conditions will persist throughout Wednesday and into the night. Showers may turn into sleet or hail at times, with potential snowfall over hills.
Brits are advised to bundle up this evening as temperatures are expected to drop close to zero.
The Met Office further warns that the near-freezing temperatures could cause untreated surfaces to become icy later tonight and early on Thursday, “especially over the Pennines and Peak District”.
