UPSC Success Story: The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is arguably the toughest recruitment exam in the country, requiring utmost dedication, hard work, perseverance to crack the test. Each year, millions of aspirants, who have prepared for years, take the UPSC examination with majority of successful aspirants taking several attempts to ultimately clear the exam.

However, there a handful of candidates who not clear the test in their very first attempt but ace it, emerging as toppers of their respective batches. One such UPSC success story is that of IAS Srushti Deshmukh, a young woman from Bhopal who aced the UPSC CSE in her very first attempt, and emerged as one of the toppers, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 5.

Who is IAS Srushti Deshmukh?

Born on March 28, 1996 in an upper middle-income household in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Srushti Jayant Deshmukh is the daughter of an engineer father, while her mother is a school teacher. With both her parents being well-educated, education was a top priority in her home, and this proved beneficial in nurturing Srushti academic talents from a very young age.

Her father, an engineer at a private firm, and her mother, a teacher at a private school, taught their daughter the importance of hard work and perseverance since childhood, which would prove to be her key to success later in life.

Since her school years at the Carmel Convent School in Bhopal, Srushti Deshmukh excelled in academics, and achieved 10 CGPA in her class 10, and 93% marks in class 12th examinations, respectively. After her schooling, Srushti Deshmukh earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering degree from the Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal, in 2018.

However, beyond her academic accolades, Srushti wanted to achieve something much more significant in her life, and as such embarked on her journey to crack the UPSC CSE and join the civil services.

Srushti Deshmukh was determined to crack the UPSC examination in her fist attempt and as such adopted a systematic and disciplined approach to prepare for the tough recruitment test. Unlike most UPSC aspirants, Srushti did not rely on coaching classes, and instead focused on self-study.

As part of her UPSC preparation regimen, Srushti read daily newspapers to keep up with current affairs, and also watched House proceedings, and informative programming on Rajya Sabha TV, which not increased her knowledge, but also sharpened her analytical skills, something which proved extremely helpful in UPSC examination.

After almost a year of extensive preparation, Srushti Deshmukh’s hard work paid off as she cracked UPSC CSE in her first attempt in 2018, emerging as the female topper of her batch. Srushti Deshmukh scored 895 marks in Mains, and 173 marks in the interview phase, securing an AIR of 5.

During her journey of becoming an IAS officer, Srushti Deshmukh also found love when she met her future husband IAS Dr. Nagarjuna B Gowda, when they were undergoing training at the Lal Bahadur National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The duo became friends, fell in love, and ultimately tied the knot in April 2022.

Currently, IAS Srushti Deshmukh Gowda is posted as the CEO of Zila Panchayat in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh. Deshmukh was appointed to this role on July 25, 2023.
