At the age of 15, Dimple Kapadia married Rajesh Khanna, who was nearly twice her age and the reigning superstar of Indian cinema. The couple welcomed two daughters, Twinkle and Rinkie Khanna, but their marriage was short-lived, ending in separation after nine years. Although the couple never got legally divorced, but lived separately after facing tumultuous challenges in their relationship.
For Dimple Kapadia, the whole experience was traumatic. In a 1994 interview with Pritish Nandy, Dimple discussed the reasons behind her tumultuous marriage to Rajesh Khanna. “I think we were two very different kinds of people. And I was probably very young to understand what was happening to this man who was a superstar. I mean I have never been able to understand stars and their behavior pattern at all because I am not one myself. It’s very difficult for me to… I couldn’t understand it. I just couldn’t understand it.” She said. When asked, whether it was traumatic, Dimple quickly responded, “Yes, it was.”
Rajesh Khanna was at the peak of his career, when he married Dimple, but his stardom began to fade, which became quite disruptive for him, also affecting his marriage with Dimple. In another candid conversation, Dimple revealed that she thought that her relationship with the actor would be all dreamy and filmy, but in reality it was not the same, and she was left “shattered.”
Recalling the innocence, Dimple shared, “I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. So, when we reached the mountains and there was no song, no gust of wind, I was in a bad state because my dream was shattered. I seriously believed it. I mean, how dumb can you get? But well, that was me,”, she discussed at FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter a few years ago.
Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna separated in 1982. The couple were estranged, but never got legally divorced. Stating the reasons, the superstar mentioned that his wife was not ready to divorce him, due to her possible reasons. Dimple also once expressed that Rajesh Khanna, as the father of her daughters, was an important part of her life.
