Manchester United’s transfer rumour mill is spinning by the day with the summer transfer window getting closer and closer.

Ruben Amorim and the recruitment team at Old Trafford face a challenging period before the 2025/26 season with a number of positions requiring attention. In an ideal world, United will sign at least five players to improve the current squad.

A new attacker seems to be the priority with a host of centre-forwards linked with a move to United. Liam Delap is understood to be the number one target while the potential exit of Alejandro Garnacho could unleash a move for another attacking midfielder.

Here, The Manchester Evening News brings you two transfer stories from the last 24 hours and a fresh perspective on them…

Agent talks held

United’s pursuit of Matheus Cunha looks set to rumble on towards the end of the season and according to reports, the recruitment team at Old Trafford are applying pressure on a move.

Give Me Sport have claimed that sources have told them that United have held a meeting with the Wolves star’s agents over a possible summer transfer. The report adds that Amorim sees the Brazilian as a potential arrival alongside Liam Delap.

Cunha has a £62.5million release clause in his contract at Molineux but the report adds that United are confident of structuring a financial package better-suited to them to enter negotiations.

Josh Holland of The Manchester Evening News says: “Cunha is one of the names that should be one of United’s serious targets this summer. His performances for Wolves in the past two seasons warrant a move to one of Europe’s top teams.

“His versatility to play at centre-forward and as an attacking midfielder means he would fit into Amorim’s system with little hassle. Holding talks with his entourage in April, before the window opens, is a smart move but the problem will lay bare with the structuring of any potential deal.

“£62.5m is a lot of money so if Jason Wilcox can be successful in his bid to get a better deal for United, it would be one of the best deals of the window.”

Free transfer talks

With a fee of over £60m touted for Cunha, United could look to target a free signing in the summer with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. According to Graeme Bailey, via Give Me Sport, Old Trafford is a surprise destination for the Everton forward.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Goodison Park expires in June and it looks likely that he will leave. Bailey has claimed that United enquired about his availability in February and will now compete with a number of Premier League and European clubs for his signature.

Marseille, AC Milan, Juventus and RB Leipzig are all said to be considering a move.

Josh Holland of The Manchester Evening News says: “No. A deal that makes little sense. Doubts over Delap have emerged due to his age and experience and while Calvert-Lewin has experience on his side, his availability is enough for Amorim to shut this one down.

“The striker has been out of action in recent weeks due to injury, something the supporters on Merseyside are so used to. Calvert-Lewin has been absent since January, missing 13 games.

“In the last five seasons, he has missed 87 games through injury. He can’t be the answer to United’s attacking problems.”
