Manchester United have been handed a potential boost in their hopes of signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

United have been credited with an interest in signing the Slovenia international over the last few weeks, particularly during the January transfer window. Now that the summer window is just a couple of months away from opening, and it seems that a move to Old Trafford may have been handed a boost.

German news outlet Bild have provided an update on Sesko’s future, claiming that United do have an interest in the player. However, the Reds will apparently face competition from Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan for the striker’s signature.

The report goes on to say, though, that a move to Bayern is unlikely, given Harry Kane is the Bundesliga club’s first-choice striker option. It has been claimed Sesko would want to join a club where he is the main striker, and would not not want to settle for a place on the bench.

United could give that role to Sesko if the striker were to complete a move to Old Trafford. The Reds currently have Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as their centre forward options, but neither have managed to nail down a regular starting spot in the team this season under head coach Ruben Amorim or his predecessor, Erik ten Hag.

Zirkzee has scored six goals for United this season since completing a €42.5million (£36million) move from Bologna last summer. Hojlund has eight goals to his name this season and is nearing the end of his second campaign at Old Trafford after arriving from Atalanta for £72million in 2023.

Sesko is not the only striker to be linked with signing for United this season, either. Lille’s Jonathan David, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike and Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen have all been mentioned on the rumour mill as being possible centre forward options for United.

Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, moved to clarify any talk of a potential loan move to Arsenal in January, expressing his surprise at such a suggestion. “I don’t know from where does this story comes,” he said.

“I never talked with Arsenal about loan of Sesko. Sesko is not a player for loans, never a topic for Arsenal or any other club.”

He added: “I think Sesko could suit many clubs because he has different football skills. He can play alone in attack, with two strikers, a little further back, he has height, speed, technical speed.”
