Manchester United have qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa League after beating Lyon 7-6 on aggregate at Old Trafford
Manchester United have qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa League after beating Lyon 7-6 on aggregate after a hugely dramatic night at Old Trafford.
United headed into the clash with the Ligue 1 club with the match firmly in the balance after a 2-2 draw in France. However, the Reds pushed on and asserted their authority at the Theatre of Dreams.
Manuel Ugarte scored a wonderful goal after a brilliant move was capped off in front of the Stretford End. On the stroke of half-time, the Reds made it two when Diogo Dalot shrugged off a challenge from the visitors before nonchalantly firing the ball in off the far post.
Alejandro Garnacho missed a glorious chance to make it 3-0 and it looked like it could come back to haunt him when Corentin Tolisso powered a close-range header into the back of the net. And that proved to be right as Andre Onana could not keep Nicolas Tagliafico’s strike out.
Tolisso was sent off just before the start of extra time but that was only half the story. Lyon incredibly managed to go 4-2 up thanks to Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty.
However, a Bruno Fernandes penalty, Kobbie Mainoo strike and Harry Maguire header turned the game completely on its head and sparked wild scenes. With their place in the semi-finals somehow secured, MEN Sport has taken a look at the yellow card rules in the Europa League after the victory over Lyon.
What are the Europa League yellow card rules?
Before today’s match, Ugarte and Casemiro were both at risk of suspension for the semi-finals after being just one yellow card away from a ban. However, both men avoided being cautioned as such will not be suspended for the last-four.
What’s more, the duo and the rest of the United squad, can relax about booking suspensions. All yellow cards are wiped at the end of the quarter-finals and are not carried over to the semi-finals.
Should a player be booked in the first and second legs of the semi-finals, they will not be suspended for the final. The only way to be banned for the semi-final is if a player is given a straight red card or are dismissed for a second bookable offence.
