The Budaun police in Uttar Pradesh have ordered an inquiry into the death of a 45-year-old man allegedly after being taken to a police outpost for interrogation in connection with a complaint Saturday night.
The family members of the deceased, Jagatveer Singh Yadav, claimed that Head Constable Abhishek Kumar allegedly took him to the Asafpur police outpost and tortured him. His son Akash Yadav, in a complaint to the police Saturday night, claimed that his father had ended his life after the police tortured him. But on Sunday, Jagatveer’s wife Sushila gave another complaint to the police, stating that her husband had died of a heart attack. She, however, did not deny that her husband was taken to the Asafpur police outpost by the head constable.
Dr Brijesh Singh, Superintendent of Police, Budaun, said, “The head constable who is said to have taken the deceased to the outpost has been sent to the police lines, and Deputy SP Bisoli S K Singh will probe the matter and submit his report very soon. Further action will be taken against police officers found involved in the circumstances surrounding his death.”
Akash told the police that his four-year-old son and another child living in their neighbourhood had a verbal row over a trivial issue. The situation worsened as family members engaged in heated arguments, each backing their respective children.
“They (the other child’s family) lodged a complaint with the local police outpost, following which the head constable took my father to the outpost where the police officers beat him up. This disturbed my father to the extent that he died by suicide,” said Akash.
