A Telangana court Monday sentenced a man to death and awarded life imprisonment to six other accused in the 2018 ‘honour killing’ of a 30-year-old man in Miryalaguda of the Nalgonda district, Special Public Prosecutor Darshana Narasimha told the media.
The SC/ST Sessions Second Additional Court awarded Subhash Sharma the death penalty for the murder of P Pranay Kumar. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Sharma and Rs 10,000 each on the other six convicts.
The woman’s father, T Maruthi Rao, who allegedly hired contract killers for Rs 1 crore, reportedly died by suicide while out on bail in 2020. Maruthi Rao hired contract killers to murder Pranay Perumalla, a Dalit man, in September 2018. Pranay was hacked to death in broad daylight while walking out of a hospital with his pregnant wife, Amrutha, in Miryalaguda. The crime was caught on CCTV cameras, leading to a public outcry.
The Nalgonda police filed a detailed chargesheet under Indian Penal Code sections 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 109 (abetment) as well as the Indian Arms Act, naming eight accused in 2019.
