A man has been sentenced following an incident which saw armed police swarm a Cardiff neighbourhood. Seven officers, two of whom carried guns, were seen at 10.30pm last Sunday at the junction of Leckwith Road and Broad Street in Canton.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said officers were called to the area at 9.49pm after “reports of men with knives”. She added: “Firearms officers also attended. Two men in their 30s, one man in his 50s, and one woman in her 40s were arrested on suspicion of affray.”

Police later released the man in his 50s and woman in her 40s with no further action, and bailed the two men in their 30s pending further enquiries.

Wass, of Grafton Street in Castleford, Wakefield, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court and admitted that last Sunday he stole £15.99 worth of alcohol from the Why Not Ozzy off-licence in Severn Road.

The court imposed a £40 fine, £85 in prosecution costs, a £16 victim services surcharge and £15.99 in compensation.

Wass must pay the penalties at a rate of at least £20 a month. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here

South Wales Police put in place a dispersal order from last Friday to last Sunday covering Cowbridge Road East and its surrounding area.

The force said this would give officers extra powers as a “preventative measure following a recent spate of incidents”.
