Major road shuts as emergency services descend on scene after crash


Police, paramedics and fire crews all responded

There was a a large emergency service response this response with a man cut free after a crash. It happened on Manchester Road in Ashton, Tameside, at around 11:15am.

Two vehicles were involved in the smash, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

Police closed the road, close to the BP petrol station and Ashton police station.

Paramedics and fire crews also attended. Firefighters helped rescue a man from one of the vehicles before being handed over to paramedics.

It’s not clear if the man was taken to hospital.

However a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed no one was seriously injured.

A GMFRS statement said: “At just after 11.15am on Friday (February 28) two fire engines from Ashton and Stalybridge fire stations plus the technical response unit from Ashton fire station attended a crash involving two vehicles on Manchester Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.

“Firefighters rescued one man from a vehicle before handing them to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Crews were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”

The road was closed for over an hour before being reopened.
