Six persons were killed and four others were injured after a tempo and truck collided on a flyover at Dwarka Circle in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Sunday. Two of the injured are said to be in a critical condition, police said, adding the injured were admitted to four different hospitals, including the Nashik district hospital.
According to police, the incident took place near an Ayyappa temple at 7.30 pm when the tempo traveller carrying 16 passengers was on its way to CIDCO area in Nashik after attending a religious event in Niphad.
“The tempo driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the truck carrying iron rods from behind. Some died on the spot, while some of the injured are in critical condition,” an official said, adding that there were no lights or any indicator that the truck was carrying rods that were jutting out.
Police and fire brigade personnel carried out rescue operations along with residents and passersby, he said adding that the incident led to major traffic snarls on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, where traffic for three-four kilometres came to a halt for nearly 45 minutes.
An official said that while the tempo was going at high speed, the truck driver too should have taken precautions while carrying iron rods in a precarious manner.
“We will likely register an FIR against the drivers of both the vehicles. Right now, the priority is to save the lives of as many people as we can,” the official added.
