Mahapanchayat lands Uttarakhand MLA in new police case days after his camp office was fired upon | India News

Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar and 200 of his supporters were booked for unlawful assembly, rioting and criminal conspiracy Friday after his supporters allegedly scuffled with the police at a mahapanchayat held “without permission”.

According to Haridwar Police, there was stone pelting at the mahapanchayat, after which a case was registered against the independent MLA and his supporters.

The police said that they were identifying and arresting the accused, and warned of strict action against those trying to disrupt peace. “Haridwar Police is closely monitoring social media and strict action will be taken against those spreading misinformation. A forensic team has collected evidence from the site, and strict action will follow based on findings,” a statement said.

According to the police, their initial investigation revealed that 80-90 people from Uttar Pradesh attempted to gather on the grounds of Kisan Inter College. When the police instructed them to leave, they allegedly engaged in scuffles, misbehaviour, and stone pelting. “The police used force to disperse them and restore peace. Four police personnel sustained injuries and are undergoing medical examinations,” it said.

Kumar’s supporters Friday gathered in Laksar for the programme to extend solidarity with the MLA and protest the recent firing at his camp office by former BJP MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion.

On Saturday, independent MLA Umesh Kumar went to Champion’s house accusing him of hurling abuses following which Champion allegedly fired at Kumar’s camp office. While both were arrested, Champion, who is facing attempted murder charges, was sent to jail while Kumar got bail. According to sources, Champion’s supporters held a Gujjar Mahapanchayat in Landhaura earlier this week and was granted permission.
