From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Liverpool host Aston Villa in a late Saturday kick off as Arne Slot’s side attempt to enter the international break sitting top of the Premier League.
The Reds come into the match on the back of a 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and a victory over Villa will cap off a fine week that has also seen Slot’s team secure a comeback victory over Brighton last weekend. Liverpool have won eight of theur 10 league games and have a two-point advantage over reigning champions Manchester City though any slip up could cause them to fall down the table.
Dropping points against Villa is a realistic possibility. Unai Emery’s men have made a strong start to the season and currently sit sixth in the table though they are in a poor run of form. A shock 4-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend was followed by a 1-0 loss to Club Brugge after Tyrone Mings’ calamitous error during the week.
Taking points off Liverpool at Anfield would turn about Villa’s form and send them into the break with a bit of momentum. Can they do so?

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa
GOAL! The hosts are ahead after a scintillating counter-attack!
The corner is cleared and it comes to van Dijk just outside the area. Without even looking, he knows there’ll be options so he knocks it up field into the path of Salah. The Egyptian drives towards goal but is dragged down by Bailey – it looks like a certain red card but Nunez latches onto the loose ball, takes a touch past Martinez and fires in!

Liverpool 0-0 Aston Villa
Konsa makes a great run to carry into the box but is then dispossessed too easily. Liverpool counter but it’s a little wasteful from Nunez, who opts to shoot but sees it blocked. No clear-cut chances from either side yet, but plenty of pace to the game!

Liverpool 0-0 Aston Villa
There’s a large gap in the Liverpool defence as Digne’s run takes Konate away, and Ramsey has space to cut in, but there’s great tracking back from Gravenberch to block the shot.
The hosts come forward again but the ball gets away from Nunez.
A bright start from the home side, though Villa have had a half-chance too!

Liverpool 0-0 Aston Villa
It’s certainly the home side who’ve started more confidently here, and there’s plenty of pace to their play when needed too.
Villa do mount their first attack though, as Rogers offloads it to Watkins before the England striker curls an effort over from outside the box. Never troubling Kelleher that one.
