Litigant caught smoking cigarette on video call, Delhi court summons him | Delhi News

A Delhi court Wednesday summoned a litigant for smoking a cigarette on video-conferencing (VC) while proceedings were going on.

“Applicant no.1/Sh. Sushil Kumar is directed to remain present in court on 29.03.2025 and file his explanation as to why action should not be taken against him for smoking on VC during court proceedings. Court notice be also issued to applicant no. 1/Sh.Sushil Kumar for appearing in person, in the court, on NDOH (next date of hearing),” said District Judge Shiv Kumar in his order dated March 25. He listed the matter for hearing on March 29.

According to the court order, while hearings of other cases were going on, Kumar was talking on the phone. After this, the court asked him to refrain from doing so as it was disturbing the proceedings.

Despite this, Kumar paid no heed to the court’s directions following which he was put on mute mode. When asked about his “misconduct”, he apologised to the court and said he wouldn’t repeat the same mistake.

A few moments later, a court staff, who was managing the VC facility as the reader of the court was on leave, caught Kumar puffing a cigarette as an order was being dictated.

When asked about this misconduct, Kumar left the web meeting. At the same time, his lawyer left the courtroom after taking a date for the next hearing.
