Krump, a fast, powerful form of street dance, was in the Ottawa spotlight on Saturday with a free Dance for All workshop in the lobby of the National Arts Centre.
Leading the workshop was Montreal resident Kevin Gohou, also known as Jr Maddripp, considered one of the mentors and innovators of the krump movement in Europe. In 2014, he was named “Junior Maddripp” in the Tight Eyez Family, alongside the pioneer and creator of Krump dance.

An NAC media release said krump — its letters stand for “Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise” — emerged from South-Central Los Angeles a quarter-century ago and described it as “a rhythmic, fast-paced, exaggerated style of street dance that serves as an outlet to channel and externalize strong emotions, such as pain and suffering.”
Jr Maddripp was in Ottawa for Silent Legacy, a production by Maud Le Pladec featuring Gohou, at the NAC on Feb. 20-22.
Postmedia’s Ashley Fraser took in the workshop and collected these images.
