Kerala govt clears 2 townships for Wayanad landslide survivors | Thiruvananthapuram News

The Kerala cabinet Thursday accorded in-principle sanction to construct two townships for rehabilitating the people affected by July’s Wayanad landslide.

One of the townships will come up on 66.41 hectares of estate land in Wayanad’s Meppadi panchayat. The other will be set up on 78.73 hectares in Kalpetta municipality in the same district.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the land for the townships will be taken over as per the Disaster Management Act to avoid delay.

The families that lost houses and land will be rehabilitated in the first phase. The second phase of rehabilitation will be for those living in vulnerable areas, as per an expert committee report.

The list of beneficiaries will be prepared by the revenue department, said the Chief Minister’s office.

Around 800 families have been affected by the landslide.

Festive offer

The cabinet has also decided to provide compensation of `10 lakh each to six children who lost both parents and `5 lakh each to eight children who lost one parent.

So far, 231 bodies have been recovered and another 47 are still missing after the devastating tragedy which wiped out the villages of Mundakkai and Chooralmala on July 30.
