The Karnataka government will spend around Rs 9,000 crore this year to improve road infrastructure in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said Thursday, adding that government was also preparing a detailed project report for 110 km of elevated corridors to ease traffic choke points at the entry to the city.
The elevated corridors will carry traffic entering Bengaluru from highways and connect it to parts of the city, Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister said.
Responding to a question by Congress MLC H P Sudham Das at the Legislative Council, Shivakumar listed the initiatives—including two tunnel roads—taken up by the government to ease traffic congestion in the city. Referring to concerns raised over tunnel roads, the deputy chief minister said “there is no alternative” to reduce congestion in the city, as land acquisition costs for widening roads would be much higher.
The total length of the two tunnel roads in the city will be 40 km. Trilok Engineering Company has already prepared a detailed project report for the roads, which has been approved by the government. “Tenders for the tunnel road will be invited soon,” he said.
“Double-decker roads”, which will have both a metro line and a flyover, are also proposed along a 64.3-km stretch of roads identified in the city. “The double-decker road will cost Rs 120 crore per kilometre. Approximately Rs 9,000 crore will be set aside for the project,” Shivakumar told the Council.
