ITV has unveiled the initial images for an upcoming thriller, Coldwater. The six-part series, set to premiere this autumn, stars Andrew Lincoln of The Walking Dead fame and Indira Varma from Obsession.

Set in the fictional Scottish village of Coldwater and filmed in and around Glasgow, the series centres on Andrew’s character John, who finds himself at the heart of disconcerting events as past traumas resurface.

John relocates his family to the rural tranquillity of Coldwater in a bid to distance themselves from London as much as possible. However, he soon finds himself grappling with resentment towards his mundane existence as a middle-aged stay-at-home dad, with his concealed anger threatening to disrupt his life as he knows it.

Following an identity crisis in London, where John failed to step in during a violent playground confrontation, he yearns for a more peaceful future for his family, only to encounter further disturbances in Coldwater.

Upon arrival, he quickly forms a friendship with his next-door neighbour Tommy, portrayed by Ewen Bremner, a charismatic, self-assured man and dedicated husband to the local vicar Rebecca, played by Eve Myles, reports the Express.

On the surface, Tommy is a man of faith, a cornerstone of the community, and the self-proclaimed leader of the village’s all-male book group.

Initially impressed and somewhat intrigued by Tommy, John soon finds himself ensnared in his web.

Meanwhile, his spouse Fiona, portrayed by Indira, harbours resentment towards him following their relocation to Coldwater, as what was meant to be a fresh start has failed to rekindle their deteriorating marriage.

As her husband’s bond with their mysterious new neighbour grows increasingly close, Fiona’s doubts are sparked, and she begins questioning whether Tommy is truly what he appears to be.

Following John’s long-suppressed fury reaching breaking point with catastrophic consequences, he suddenly discovers himself owing a debt to his new companion, oblivious to the fact that Tommy is concealing terrifying secrets of his own.

Only when a string of disturbing events begins to unfold does John start questioning Tommy’s true identity.

The synopsis hints: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation.

“A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

David Ireland penned, developed, and executive-produced Coldwater. Lee Haven Jones (Doctor Who) helms the opening three episodes, and Andrew Cumming (Shetland) handles the latter half.

Speaking previously, creator David revealed in a statement: “Cold Water started with a question I was asking myself. Where do I want to live – the countryside or the city? Such an innocent beginning, but from it came this dark, funny, twisted thriller.

“I was delighted when Sister loved the script and thrilled when ITV decided to commission it.

“And I’m amazed we’ve managed to attract such a peerless cast, led by the formidable Andrew Lincoln. I hope viewers will find it intoxicating.”

The upcoming series Coldwater is set to premiere on ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV Player this autumn.
