Man Utd forward Joshua Zirkzee spoke after the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
Joshua Zirkzee admitted he was “hurt” by Lyon’s late equaliser against Manchester United.
There were plenty of eyes on Andre Onana at the Groupama Stadium after his exchange with Nemanja Matic in the build-up to the game, and he made errors for both of Lyon’s goals.
Onana failed to anticipate a free-kick in the first half and was at fault again in added time when Lyon equalised. Zirkzee thought he’d scored the match-winner for United in the 88th minute, but Rayan Cherki pounced on a rebound from Onana’s gloves and sealed a 2-2 draw for Lyon.
United will welcome Lyon to Old Trafford in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final next week, and Thursday night’s performance should give the players confidence to win the tie.
However, United could have returned to Manchester with a 2-1 advantage and that “hurt” Zirkzee.
Speaking to MUTV, Zirkzee was asked for his thoughts on the result and said: “Alright. I mean, it’s not a bad result in the end, it just hurts that the second goal for them came so late. But it is what it is, we have to move forward and focus on the next game.”
He continued: “It’s easy in this team, we make sure everyone is ready and when you get onto the pitch you just have to perform, I think we did well, obviously Lyon is also a great team, so there will be moments when they’re dangerous. I think there were some good moments we can take into the next game.”
Zirkzee discussed the second leg against Lyon and said: “Yeah, we have to win, it’s 100 per cent clear to everyone, so we will go to the game and do everything to win. You saw last time what happened at Old Trafford against Sociedad, so I think it would be nice if we can repeat that.”
