The Director General Civil Defence has written a letter to the Inspector General of Police regarding the alleged theft and transportation of sensitive bomb disposal equipment from the premises of Civil Defence office in Islamabad.
The letter informed the Islamabad Police that on May 21, 2024, an incident involving the alleged theft and unauthorized transportation of bomb disposal equipment from the premises of Directorate General Civil Defence at Plot No.23, Mauve Area, G-9/1, Islamabad took place.
Briefly stated, on May 22, 2024, an official of this office tasked with security duty reported that sensitive bomb disposal equipment stored in the basement of the office building was stolen from the office after the closing of office business.
As the existence of the sensitive equipment in the godown of the building for the last nearly 10 years was neither in the full knowledge of the newly posted Director General nor any other trustworthy officer/official, it was deemed appropriate to report the matter to the Ministry of Interior with the request for an investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the same was promptly done.
Subsequently, during the investigation, conducted by a fact-finding committee, it was observed that on 26 November 2023, at around 2 PM, an official truck bearing registration number ICT- GD-879 reportedly arrived at the National Institute of Fire Technology (NIFTECH), H-11/4, Islamabad, onto which sensitive Bomb Disposal equipment, was loaded and then transported to an unknown location. However, ironically, there is no record of this transfer either with NIFTECH or this Directorate General.
The internal investigation report has revealed that the truck belonged to Islamabad Police, as purportedly, police personnel were seen riding the truck at the time of the incident. It is believed that Imran Javed, Admin officer of this office, who has since been transferred to Federal Civil Defence Training School, Faisalabad, was involved in both the (21 May and 26 November) incidents.
“Given the above the Islamabad Police may kindly verify whether the reported transfer of the said equipment was based on any prior/mutually agreed arrangement and also ascertain the truth in the purported involvement of Police vehicles and personnel in the said uploading and transportation. An early action in the matter will be highly appreciated,” the letter added.
