The Centre on Saturday appointed senior IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh as the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a Personnel Ministry order said.
Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is currently working as Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam. He was appointed days after the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed his name.
In a order, issued on January 18, Director Sakshi Mittal said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the MHA for appointment of G P Singh as DG, CRPF, in level-16 of the pay matrix from the date of assumption of charge of the post, for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on November 30, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Singh will take charge from Special DG of the CRPF, Vitul Kumar, who is currently holding officiating charge for the post of DG-CRPF. Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, was given officiating charge on December 30 last year for the post of DG-CRPF upon the retirement of the incumbent force chief Anish Dayal Singh on December 31, 2024.
Singh has a reputation for being a tough cop. He also worked with the SPG. Since 2013, he was on central deputation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) where he served as Inspector General. Though his tenure there was to end in November 2020, he was abruptly rushed back to Assam in December 2019 as ADGP (Law and Order) to quell the violent protests that had erupted across the state against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Soon after the order had been issued, he had tweeted, “Back to ASSAM…!!! The Karmabhumi.”
In the police crackdown against the protests in Assam, four – including a 17-year-old – died allegedly in the police firing. As Special DGP (Law and Order), Singh also served as Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam, and also led the Rhino Protection Task Force constituted by the state government in 2021.
Singh is also one of the senior IPS officers, who is active on social media and has 214.7k followers on X. After his order, he posted a message, thanking Kamakhya goddess. One of his daughters is an IPS officer of AGMUT-Cadre, who is currently posted in Delhi Police.
