In a joint operation conducted by the Assam Rifles and Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), yaba tablets worth Rs 24 crore were recovered from two locations in Tripura in the past two days. Yaba is an illegal synthetic drug containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine.

In the latest operation, the team arrested one person and seized 90,000 yaba tablets worth Rs 9 crore from his possession at Teliamura in Khowai district on Thursday.

They intercepted a goods truck with cement bags that was coming from Shillong. The detained individual and the seized contraband items were handed over to DRI for legal proceedings, officials said.

In another operation on February 26, the team recovered an unclaimed bag containing 1,50,000 yaba tablets worth Rs 15 crore from the Jan Shatabdi Express train at Ambassa in Dhalai district. The contraband was later handed over to Customs for legal proceedings.

“Assam Rifles, in coordination with Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized 2,40,000 Yaba tablets worth ₹24 crore in Tripura in two consecutive days,” according to a statement.

Assam Rifles recovered contraband items worth Rs 95.56 crore during 21 different operations since this January.

The Tripura government has recently intensified its crackdown against drug peddling, particularly following an alert from Home Minister Amit Shah to the chief ministers of the region during the 72nd NEC plenary meeting held last year regarding the increasing incidents of drugs and human trafficking.
