Hair fall is a concern for most people, and spotting extra strands in the washroom drain can be unsettling. It leads to stress and a frantic search for solutions. But how much hair loss is actually normal, and when should you worry? Indianexpress.com finds out.
Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist at Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai, said that losing some hair while shampooing is completely normal, mainly since hair goes through a normal shedding cycle. “On average, it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 strands per day, and slightly more during shampooing,” she said.
However, she said certain signs require attention. “If you notice clumps of hair, a sudden increase in shedding, or visible thinning, it could be due to stress, hormonal imbalances, or nutritional deficiencies. In such cases, it’s important to address the underlying cause,” she said.

Dr Chause suggested some crucial tips to take care of hair:
Choose a gentle shampoo: Opt for sulfate-free, mild shampoos suited to your hair type. Harsh chemicals can weaken hair over time.
Detangle before washing: Comb your hair gently before shampooing to prevent breakage and reduce hair fall caused by knots.
Avoid hot water: Washing your hair with hot water strips away natural oils and weakens hair. Use cold or lukewarm water instead.

Massage your scalp gently: Avoid scrubbing too hard—massage your scalp gently to cleanse without stressing the roots.
Don’t overwash: Washing hair too frequently can dry out the scalp and cause breakage. Stick to washing it two to three times a week.
