Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Ottawa area and Gatineau on Sunday afternoon.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the agency said in a social media bulletin.
The communique cautions that the storm could bring wind gusts up to 90 km/h, “nickel sized hail” and heavy rainfall of up to 30 mm in an hour.
The storm was expected to reach the capital sometime Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.
Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility.
To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X, formerly Twitter, under the hashtag #ONStorm.
