After 50 years on Michigan Avenue, Hanig’s Footwear will soon shutter its Mag Mile location.
The staple shoe store will close near the end of September or beginning of October, owner Peter Hanig said.
According to the store’s website, the location first opened in 1978 at 875 N. Michigan Ave. in the former John Hancock Center.
Hanig’s Footwear also operates an online shop and a brick-and-mortar storefront in Wilmette, at 1181 Wilmette Ave.
Both the online store and the Wilmette location will remain open as options for customers, Hanig said.
Since announcing the closure, Hanig said he has seen “tremendous customer loyalty” and expects much of their frequent clientele to visit the Wilmette location or shop online to continue purchasing from Hanig’s Footwear.
Hanig cited the pandemic and absence of nearby stores as causes of the store’s closure.
The store relied on co-tenancy and many nearby storefronts have closed in recent years, he explained.
In 2021, Macy’s announced it would close its Water Tower Place location, and H&M moved from a nearby location at 840 N. Michigan Ave. to 679 N. Michigan Ave in 2024.
Hanig’s carries a variety of curated shoe and sock brands, including some scarcely found around the United States, like Thierry Rabotin and Maria La Rosa. The store also carries some more common brands like Hoka and On.
