On a quiet street in Soria, Spain, a Google Maps street view image shows a man load a large white sack into the boot of a red car.
The Google Maps camera car had unknowingly captured a vital clue that helped Spanish police crack a murder case.

The image, taken in the town of Tajueco in October, led to the arrests of two people following the disappearance of a Cuban man last year.

National Police cited the photograph as a “decisive” clue in the killing and dismembering of the victim, reported Spanish paper El Pais.

The man was reported missing by a relative in November last year after travelling to the town with the hope of tracking down a woman believed to be his partner.

The relative became suspicious when the missing man sent him a series of texts, telling him that he had met another woman and was leaving Spain, police said in a statement.

Police eventually arrested a woman, the missing person’s partner, and a man that the woman was romantically linked to.

“The investigation focused on locating the missing person, resulting in the discovery of a human torso in an advanced state of decomposition, buried under the ground of a cemetery in a town in Soria,” police said.

Police credited the Google Maps image as officers were able to match the red vehicle to the suspects.

“One of the clues that investigators had to use to solve the crime were some images that they detected during the investigations in a location search application,” police said.
