Gogglebox viewers were left feeling ‘disgusted’ just minutes in to Friday night’s episode and called out Channel 4 for being ‘sex obsessed’.
The episode shown on May 16 saw the return of our favourite armchair critics, sharing their thoughts on the week’s popular TV shows and films.
Viewers watched as the stars tuned into a variety of programmes including The Four Seasons, Race Across the World, The Piano, I Kissed a Boy, Made in Chelsea and Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen.
However, it was the new Channel 4 programme, Virgin Island, that sparked the most conversation. This six-part series follows 12 individuals, all virgins, as they travel to Croatia with the intention of exploring intimacy for the first time and potentially losing their virginity on camera, reports the Mirror.
Aged between 22 and 30 years old, these first-timers will work with a range of sex and relationship coaches, sexologists, ‘bodyworkers’ and even tantric masseurs to help them overcome their fears of intimacy.
As the Gogglebox cast watched in shock, the scene unfolded with sex expert Celeste Hirschman assisting contestant Jason through touch therapy.
The sexual experiment took an unexpected turn when Celeste climbed on top of Jason and began rubbing against him, leaving the Gogglebox cast in disbelief at the explicit moment.
Viewers at home expressed their ‘disgust’ while watching a scene that quickly prompted fans to take to social media. One viewer aired their thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Channel 4 is obsessed with sex.” Another posted: “Cringe worthy #gogglebox.”
A third vented online: “#Gogglebox Who thinks up these shows and who on earth would watch them. Disgusting!”. Additional comments included: “Cringe #gogglebox,” whilst another echoed the sentiment, penning: “Nah, what did i just watch #Gogglebox #VirginIsland.”
The incident comes following previous astonishment when Pete Sandiford’s real age was discovered by viewers. Since his debut in 2017 with his sister Sophie, Pete has become a much-loved figure on the show.
In 2023, Sophie divulged her own age, revealing she was 27 at the time. Pete couldn’t resist teasing her, remarking: “I’m glad you said it because I was about to say 25.”
He then jibed: “You old cow.”
However, Sophie swiftly retorted, pointing out that Pete himself was nearing a significant birthday as she responded: “You’re the big 30 this year. A dirty thirty.”
