The Liverpool City Region is playing host to a crucial by-election that could have major national ramifications. On Thursday voters across the constituency of Runcorn and Helsby went to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament for their area.

The election was triggered following the resignation of former MP Mike Amesbury who was convicted of assaulting a constituent after a drunken night out in Frodsham last year. Labour held this newly created seat comfortably at last year’s general election, securing more than 50% of the overall vote. But Sir Keir Starmer’s party face a huge test tonight from Nigel Farage’s Reform – with many suggesting this could be a very tight battle between the two parties.

This by-election will have national attention as it is the first to be held since Sir Keir’s Labour Party swept to power in last summer’s General Election, meaning the result will be analysed across the country in terms of what it means for the government and the political trends.

The full list of candidates for this election are: Catherine Anne Blaiklock (English Democrats), Dan Clarke (Liberal Party), Chris Copeman (Green Party), Paul Duffy (Liberal Democrats), Peter Ford (Workers Party), Howling Laud Hope (Monster Raving Loony Party), Sean Houlston (Conservatives), Jason Philip Hughes (Volt UK), Alan McKie (independent), Graham Harry Moore (English Constitution Party), Paul Andrew Murphy (Social Democratic Party), Sarah Pochin (Reform), Karen Shore (Labour), John Stevens (Rejoin EU), Michael Williams (independent).
