Fake insurance policy racket busted in UP’s Sambhal, 6 held | Lucknow News

The Sambhal police on Saturday said it busted an inter-state racket allegedly involved in issuing fake insurance policies and arrested six of its members.

Police said the accused fraudulently exploited the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana (PMJJY), a government life insurance scheme that provides coverage of Rs two lakh at a low premium. The scheme is open to all savings bank account holders aged 18 to 50, with the premium amount automatically deducted from their accounts on a fixed date, police added.

Police identified the arrested persons as Sharukh Khan, Hirendra Kumar, Sanju alias Roop Kishore, Prem Pal, Prem Singh Yadav and Neelam — all local residents. Prem Pal and Prem Singh, who work for a mobile company, supplied SIM cards issued in others’ names to racket members. Meanwhile, Neelam, an ASHA worker, provided information of persons suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.
Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, Krishna Kumar, pointed out that the racket operates across 12 states, and they would share details of the UP module’s arrests with authorities in other states.

Describing the modus operandi, police said the accused used various tactics to fraudulently claim benefits under the scheme. They targeted families where a member was suffering from a terminal illness. A detailed probe is on, police said.
