Emergency services race to major road after fire breaks out

Emergency services descended on a major road in Middleton this evening after a fire broke out at a derelict building. It happened on Manchester Old Road at around 7:30pm.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said a blaze broke out on the ground floor of the disused ‘commercial building.’

Four fire engines were scrambled and firefighters donned breathing apparatus as they tackled the flames.

An eyewitness said police and paramedics were also at the scene. No injuries have been reported.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At around 7.30pm on Friday 14 March, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a derelict commercial building on Manchester Old Road, Middleton.

“Four fire engines from Heywood, Whitefield, Broughton and Chadderton stations were quickly despatched to the scene, where a fire had broken out on the ground floor of the building.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“GMFRS crews were in attendance for just over an hour.”
