While it’s widely known that drivers can face hefty penalties for speeding, they could also be slapped with a fine of up to £5,000 for doing the exact opposite.
Although not common on UK roads, there are certain areas which enforce minimum speed limits. These zones, indicated by a circular blue sign displaying the minimum speed limit, are typically found in places where increased congestion could pose a risk, such as tunnels.
However, it’s crucial to remember that there isn’t a law setting a minimum speed limit across the entirety of the UK. Therefore, motorists must stay vigilant for speed signs and use their own judgement to drive responsibly and appropriately.
Interestingly, even in regions where no minimum speed limits are enforced, you could still find yourself in hot water for driving too slowly. This is because crawling along a road where other vehicles are adhering to the maximum speed limit can heighten the likelihood of an accident, particularly on motorways which are designed to accommodate faster speeds than other routes.
If a driver is stopped for dawdling, officers could accuse them of committing the offence of careless driving. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, which applies in Scotland, England and Wales, careless driving is a broad term that encompasses any offence where a driver “falls below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver”.
You could face fines of up to £5,000 and accumulate nine penalty points for careless driving, with the potential penalties escalating if it leads to a more severe outcome.
As explained by England and Wales’ Crown Prosecution Service, causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving can carry a sentence of up to five years behind bars and at least a one-year driving disqualification.
Driving too slowly, particularly on motorways, may result in an accident as other motorists might have to suddenly reduce their speed.
It’s a common misconception that the three lanes of a motorway are designated “slow” or “fast” lanes; however, this is incorrect. The Highway Code explicitly instructs that all motorway traffic should remain in the left-hand lane unless overtaking another vehicle, as stated in rule 264.
