Driver of car that injured 30 at LA club was shot, attacked by crowd

(NewsNation) — Bystanders outside a nightclub in Los Angeles attacked and shot the driver of a car that slammed into a crowd, injuring around 30 people early Saturday morning.

While searching for a suspected gunman with early reports of shots fired, police said they discovered the driver had been shot, according to the Associated Press. It’s unclear whether he was shot before or after the crash.

People were lined up at a taco stand, and some were waiting to enter the club Vermont Hollywood on West Monica Boulevard when the car drove into the crowd around 2 a.m., authorities said.

The man “lost consciousness” while driving, Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer Capt. Adam VanGerpen said at the scene as first responders were transporting victims to a hospital.

“Somebody lost consciousness inside the vehicle, drove into a taco cart and ultimately ran into a large number of people,” Van Gerpen said at the scene.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said officials are investigating.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” Bass said in a statement. “The hearts of Angelenos are with all of the victims impacted this morning.”

Three are in critical condition, and six are in serious condition, LAFD said in a statement. More than 120 fire personnel were on scene.

This is a developing story.
