A dog who doesn’t answer when his owners call him by his name has gone viral for showing off his “selective hearing.”
Goose the golden retriever is a beloved pet with a whole TikTok account, @goldengoosetavo, dedicated to his antics. The young dog has now gone viral, after a video showing him waking from a deep slumber—because he somehow heard a banana being peeled—resonated hugely with pet owners.
In the clip, posted in July and boasting more than 30,000 likes and close to 350,000 views, Goose’s owner carefully peels a banana at the kitchen sink, while the golden appears to be in a deep sleep on the floor on the other side of the room. But, almost the second the woman tears the banana from the bunch, Goose jumps upright and is moving toward the fruit before he is even fully on his four legs.
His owner can be heard bursting out laughing as Goose comes around the kitchen counter, ready to give puppy eyes to get a bite of banana.
And, adding to the hilarity, his owner wrote over the video: “‘Can’t’ hear us call his name. Can hear a banana peel from across the room in the middle of REM [rapid eye movement sleep].”
TikTok users were in stitches, flocking to the comments to share their own stories, with one saying their dog “can distinguish the cheese drawer from other fridge drawers.”
“Mine can hear me pick up the peanut butter jar from the pantry and will not respond to any other jar being moved,” another said, as a third wrote: “My dog doesn’t respond to her name but will come running from the other side of the house at the very quiet sound of the treat jar.”
And as one comment put it: “So every dog actually has selective hearing.”

Others shared their dogs’ love for certain fruits, while more admitted surprise that a canine would be interested in bananas.
Some fruits can be harmful to pups; however, bananas are sometimes recommended as a healthy alternative to salty or fatty dog treats, being packed with potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Apples, blueberries, oranges and mangoes are also on the safe list for dogs. However, canines should avoid avocados and tomatoes. Dogs should also never be allowed to eat grapes or raisins, as they can be extremely toxic to the animal.
