Martin Clunes has delivered some news on Doc Martin that’s bound to disappoint long-time fans.

The beloved actor, famed for his portrayal of Dr Martin Ellingham in the popular medical comedy-drama, made an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Friday (May 2). He chatted with hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Rob Rinder about his new travel documentary series.

Martin’s latest venture, Islands of the Atlantic, is set to premiere tonight at 9pm on ITV1, offering viewers a glimpse into his adventures across a stunning variety of oceanic islands.

During the interview, the conversation also veered towards Martin’s recent reunion with Neil Morrissey, his co-star from the sitcom Men Behaving Badly.

As the interview was drawing to a close, Charlotte inquired about the potential return of Doc Martin: “Talking about things coming back, everyone’s obviously been a huge fan of Doc Martin, is there any chance that it might come back?” reports Devon Live.

Martin responded: “I’m almost at the age where a GP has to retire, do you see?” which prompted a surprised “no” from Rob.

Reflecting on the duration of the show, Martin added, “18 years in private medicine,” leading Charlotte to suggest: “Yeah, but we could have Doc Martin [in] the retirement years?”

The actor then playfully proposed: “Old Doc Martin. What about the prequel? Young Doc, baby Doc Martin.”

Rob wrapped up the discussion by commenting on Martin’s seemingly ageless appearance: “You don’t seem to age, I don’t know what’s going on.”

Doc Martin, created by Dominic Minghella, chronicled the life of the talented yet socially awkward doctor who relocates from London to the idyllic Cornish village of Port Wenn.

After a decade of success, the series concluded with a festive special in December 2022, which was the last time audiences saw the much-loved Cornish doctor.

“All good things have to come to an end, and I’m sure there are lots of people who aren’t fans of the show who think it’s terribly repetitive anyway. But we’re at huge pains not to repeat ourselves,” Martin said on Loose Women at the time.

“I just think we’ve sort of done everything. I mean, it would be so great to just sort of carry on, but I don’t think we can keep it as good.”
