Customers of luxurious Brooklyn Bathhouse claim they got UTIs after visiting the elite spa

Multiple customers of the luxurious spa Bathhouse have claimed to have gotten urinary tract infections after their experience.

The glamorous Bathhouse, which has two locations in New York City – one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and one in the Flatiron District of Manhattan – offers amenities including thermal pools, saunas, steam rooms, and massages.

But the spa – which costs $40 per day pass – has recently found itself in hot water amid a slew of swirling claims that customers developed UTIs after visiting.

Despite the high price tag and seemingly exclusive atmosphere, previous customers of the luxury spa took to a subreddit thread called Williamsburg to talk about their negative experiences recently.

‘I went to Bathhouse [Williamsburg] for my birthday and the renovations are so nice but I noticed the hot tub and body temp tub were looking kinda dirty and gross,’ one wrote.

‘I thought it would be fine, but then I ended up with a UTI.’

The poster added: ‘My friend went to the Flatiron location a couple [of] days before me and also ended up with a UTI.

‘[I don’t know] if they need like better chlorine or what but I’ve literally never gotten a UTI from a pool and grew up as a competitive swimmer so it must be pretty bad.’

Their post has received almost 140 comments, with many other Bathhouse customers sharing their similar experiences.

‘I went to Williamsburg Bathhouse last Sunday and got a terrible UTI within 48 hours,’ someone else commented.

‘For context, I’m 30 [years old] and I’ve never had a UTI in my life.

‘I didn’t even know what it was until my girlfriend heard me describe the symptoms and told me.’

‘I’m sure that it came from Bathhouse. The water just felt [icky] to me, especially that lukewarm pool. Maybe they aren’t using enough chlorine or something? Idk. Gross.’

‘I went to the Williamsburg location once and was disgusted,’ another Reddit user wrote.

‘They have showers in the sauna and pool area but no soap? And many people are just going straight from the sauna into the pool. It’s appalling. I will stick to Korean spas.’

‘Yeah, I was there the other day for a prenatal massage and I stayed in the pool for a while and I noticed that multiple pools were dirty like you can literally see things floating in the pool from other people. I left promptly,’ a soon-to-be-mom said.

Another commenter said you ‘couldn’t pay’ them to go back to the luxury bathhouse.

‘Bathhouse is disgusting. I went on New Year’s Day, and there were like 60 people down in that tiny area,’ they wrote.

‘Way too many to even be spaced out amongst the available amenities. I was the only one using the showers.

‘I was so shocked and grossed out. You couldn’t pay me to go back.’

Someone else wrote about their recent experience at the pools, and she claimed that they saw a man do something unpleasant.

‘Damn went yesterday and I like the expansion, but the pools were definitely dirty. I saw some plastic in a pool and some black particles,’ they commented, in part.

‘I saw someone get out of the pool walk towards the warm pool, blow his nose out in his hand, and rub it on his chest as he entered into [the] warm pool.’

At the Williamsburg location, the day pass starts at $40 depending on the day and time you choose.

It also offers memberships if you want to be a frequent flyer. They have a Starter Membership for $145, a Standard Membership for $225, and an Unlimited Weekday Membership for $320, per the website.

UTIs occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract through the urethra and spreads to the bladder, per Healthline.

It’s possible to get an infection from dirty pool water, not showering after swimming, or from sitting in a wet bathing suit.

Bathhouse has responded to DailyMail.com’s request for comment denying the claims from the Reddit posts.

‘The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority and always has been,’ the statement from Bathhouse reads.

‘These social media posts are not true. Urinary tract infections are not transferred through well-chlorinated water that meets Department of Health standards.

‘Our pools are always maintained to the highest standards. In fact, we exceed Department of Health requirements. Our pools are continuously monitored by a computerized system and we further check the chemistry manually every two hours for verification.

‘There has never been a time that our pools have been at unsafe chlorine levels and we see thousands of customers each week.

‘In addition to chlorine, we use ultraviolet light filters for the pool water as an extra precaution.

‘We are proud of our record on health and safety.’
