Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon turned up in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, in a carefully planned but unannounced visit that makes him the first royal family member to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded the country three years ago. Not many other royals have visited Ukraine either, but Norway was keen to show its ongoing support for the war-torn country.
The crown prince was accompanied by Energy Minister Terje Aasland, who continues to stress the need for Norway to keep producing oil and gas to offset earlier Russian supplies that have been cut off. Both arrived in Kyiv on a night train from Poland and visited a power plant that’s been a target of attacks by both Russian missiles and drones.
Crown Prince Haakon also visited memorials to fallen Ukrainian soldiers and some recovering from serious war injuries at a medical rehabilitation center. Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, who has received a constant stream of visitors since the war began, took time to also meet with the crown prince and once again thank Norway for both its military and humanitarian aid.
