There were dramatic scenes in the ITV soap following Rob Donovan’s return to Weatherfield before the emotional aftermath began
Coronation Street fans have said they’re ‘in mourning’ as they were left worried about Carla Connor and DS Lisa Swain’s future following the recent armed siege.
There were dramatic scenes in the ITV soap following Rob Donovan’s return to Weatherfield. The escaped prisoner, despite being in a bad way, made his way back to the Street having gone on the run after being a kidney donor for his sister, Carla.
He headed to his ex-fiancée Tracy Barlow for help and she reluctantly agreed. But she was soon concerned for her own safety when Rob was revealed to have a gun – and he wasn’t afraid to use it.
After he rebuffed her pleas to phone for help as he bled heavily on her dad’s sofa from his surgical wound, Rob demanded that she call his sister Carla, weeks after they last came face-to-face when, with the help of prison officer Mandy, they kidnapped the Underworld factory boss and took to to an abandoned warehouse.
Tracy agreed to get Carla to Rob, and she created a ruse to ensure the Underworld factory boss turned up. Carla was horrified when she did arrive and found a gravely ill Rob, who forced Tracy to serve Carla an out-of-date meal of spaghetti on toast.
Knowing his time was up, Rob, still brandishing the gun, revealed to the Underworld factory boss that his plan was to make her watch him die so that the memories would haunt her forever.
Carla tried her best to talk to him and started discussing memories from their childhood, but Rob seemed intent on going ahead with his plan regardless. Distracting him, Tracy seized her chance to escape, raising the alarm with Lisa on the way out, who swapped places with the florist.
In the end, their was a scuffle between Rob and Lisa with the gun and a shot rang out. Armed police then stormed No.1 Coronation Street with Lisa dropping the gun and putting her hands in the air, while Carla pushed her brother to the flood and held his hand as they were faced with the armed police.
DC Kit Green arrested Rob but that wasn’t the end of the drama as Lisa discovered her daughter Betsy had been hit by the rogue bullet and was rushed to hospital.
During Wednesday night’s (March 26) Corrie, there was an anxious wait for Lisa and Carla for news on Betsy. Eventually, a doctor informed them that Betsy was having an operation and that her injury could be life-changing.
Later, during an emotional heart-to-heart outside the hospital, Lisa opens up to Carla about what really happened behind closed doors when she went head-to-head with Rob. Breaking down in tears, Lisa said: “[Rob] didn’t fire the gun. I did. It was my finger that pulled the trigger. I shot my own daughter.”
Betsy was later seen back from surgery and comfortable in her hospital room when she explained that she had ended up outside the hostage scene because she was worried about Lisa. But when she realised she couldn’t feel her arm, she was scared and the doctor explained that she may only lose feeling in her arm for a few weeks – but that there’s also a chance the nerve damage may be permanent.
Upset and angry, Lisa went to see Rob and vented her frustrations. But Rob couldn’t have been any less sympathetic as he goaded her from his own hospital bed. While tempted, she refused to take the bait, telling him to enjoy living out the rest of his life behind bars before thanking him for the kidney he gave Carla.
But it was Rob who had the last say as he warned Lisa that Carla was always dragging down those who love her and once back with Betsy, Lisa lashed out at Carla and blamed her for Betsy being shot. Carla was shocked by Lisa feeling’s and was left alone when Lisa vowed to focus on her daughter.
And the scenes left Corrie fans concerned for the much-loved couple. @megsswain said: “I need the day off for temporary mourning. If they don’t fix this on Friday im rioting #swarla.”
@swarlahq commented: “Did Lisa Swain just break our hearts? Yes. Yes she did. She better come to her senses on Friday, or there will be riots. #Swarla.” @carrlaconnor shared: “Please respect my privacy during this very trying time… I am in mourning!!!” alongside a clip of Lisa’s remarks to Carla.
@missmollybruton shared: “I understand that Lisa is feeling guilty about what happened. But blaming Carla and just hurting her by basically saying she regretted not just their relationship but the friendship they built as well? That will absolutely break Carla. I love Lisa, I do, but this… #swarla.”
@Swarla_LOML posted: “The way Lisa turns and looks at Carla through the window . . . the pain in both of their eyes i hate this #swarla.” @swoosh286 added: “Oh Lisa, you let Rob get inside your head. She knows it’s not Carla’s fault deep down but she is taking it out on the person she loves most & needs to shift blame from herself to stop herself from going under. Poor Carla #swarla.”
