Chris Davies has provided an update after Birmingham City star Jay Stansfield was stretchered off in the 2-1 win over Bradford City in the Vertu Trophy semi-final
Jay Stansfield has gone to hospital for tests after an awkward landing in Birmingham City’s Vertu Trophy semi-final victory over Bradford.
Stansfield notched his 20th goal of the season to give Blues the lead but his evening was cut short on the hour.
He was felled in the box by Bradford defender Romoney Crichlow in an incident that referee Sam Oldham didn’t deem worthy of a penalty. Bradford went straight up the other end and levelled through Bobby Pointon.
Blues’ fury quickly turned to concern for their record signing with Stansfield motionless at the other end of the field. He was treated on the field before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.
The ex-Fulham striker missed the celebrations at St Andrew’s after Lyndon Dykes went on to score an 88th minute winner to send Blues to Wembley for the first time in 14 years.
“It was above his knee,” said Blues manager Chris Davies. “It was a bad fall and the player has landed on him. He’s gone to hospital for checks. To get stretchered off and be in that amount of pain is obviously a huge concern.
“I think it was the impact of the leg. It’s the severity of that impact. That’s what they’re concerned about. The guy has landed on the bone so that’s the concern. He was in a lot of pain and he’s gone off to the hospital, they’re hoping within the next few hours they are going to get the results that are more definitive.”
