The coastguard cordoned off a popular coastal path in New Brighton this afternoon after multiple people, including children, and dogs were knocked over by powerful waves.

The Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team was called to the Marine Lake, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea, today, March 30. The walkway separating the lake from the sea was closed.

A coastguard spokesman urged people to “respect the water” and avoid the area. They said: “This afternoon, our team responded to reports of multiple people, including children and dogs, being knocked over by powerful waves on the walkway at New Brighton Marine Lake.

“Remember, the sea is unpredictable! What may seem like ‘just a bit of water’ carries incredible force. One cubic meter of water weighs about a ton, and waves can hurl dangerous debris like wood and bricks.

“A huge thanks to RNLI Wirral Lifeguards who paused their vital training to assist until Coastguard vehicles arrived. The walkway was closed until conditions improved. No photo is worth risking your life! Stay safe, stay back, and respect the power of the sea.”
