“The Board of Directors at Baylous Cemetery has been unable to identify any graves which have been disturbed,” a statement released by the board said. “We hope that the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office will be able to solve this case quickly and prosecute those responsible for this heinous crime to the fullest extent of the law.”

The corpse was first spotted Thursday night, a damaged casket was nearby.

Cabell County Sheriff Doug Adams said a family visiting the cemetery discovered the corpse.

“They stumbled across what appeared to be a casket which had the bottom broken out of it. They then found the corpse of an infant male,” Adams said on MetroNews Midday.

An investigation continues, Adams said.

“It takes a sick individual in my opinion that would mess with any loved ones gravesite and resting place and we’re not going to stop until we get to the bottom of it,” Adams said.

The remains were sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.
