Celebrity Gogglebox fans slam ‘forced’ Channel 4 show minutes into new series

Celebrity Gogglebox viewers were left unimpressed just minutes into the new series as Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay joined the star-studded line-up of the Channel 4 show

Gogglebox fans were quick to express their disappointment with the new series’ format change just minutes into the show.

Channel 4’s popular programme typically features a variety of ordinary households and friends commenting on the most talked-about television shows and movies of the week.

But on Friday (June 6) night, the celebrity edition made its comeback, introducing a slew of well-known personalities ready to share their thoughts on some beloved TV programmes.

The lineup included the likes of Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay, as well as Clare Balding and Alice Arnold, adding their star power to the show’s latest iteration.

Returning Gogglebox favourites such as television host Rylan Clark with his mum Linda, and radio presenter Nick Grimshaw alongside his niece Liv, reclaimed their spots on the couch, reports the Manchester Evening News.

This season also welcomed new celebrities like television star Vicky Pattison and The Only Way Is Essex’s Pete Wicks to its roster.

Viewers saw the celebs delve into an array of shows including ‘Race Across the World’, ‘Faking It’, ‘Celebrity Bridge of Lies’, ‘Silence Is Golden’, ‘Big Zuu and AJ Tracey’s Rich Flavours’, ‘Canal Boat Diaries’, and coverage of ‘ITV News – Trump and Musk’.

Yet, audience members didn’t hesitate to air their dissatisfaction with the celebrity version online, suggesting it seemed rather inauthentic.

A viewer voiced their opinion on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, stating: “Not the dreaded celebrities again, so many of them are so annoying #Celebritygogglebox.”

Another voiced their discontent: “We watch normal #Gogglebox because it’s hilarious and we love all the families. #celebritygogglebox is not funny and we couldn’t care less about the celebs. It’s just people watching telly.”

A third wrote: “Celebrity Gogglebox just isn’t funny like the original, it feels forced! #gogglebox #Celebritygogglebox.”

Nevertheless, some viewers are welcoming the concept as one enthusiast stated: “#Celebritygogglebox #Gogglebox 1st minute and we see Alex Scott and Jess Glynn. I’m already into this series, I hope we get to see the Eubanks too, TV gold are Chris and Junior.”

These comments come amidst news that Rylan has been reflecting on his and his mum’s future in television after fans have been clamouring for a show starring the popular pair.

Sharing with the Daily Star, Rylan said: “We’ve been offered hundreds of things. We got asked to do a travel show and the chance to go here and go there.”

He explained that while the idea seems hilarious, it’s not feasible as his mum is not well enough to commit to such projects. He added that doing Gogglebox suits them due to its simplicity and because they can film comfortably in his kitchen.
