Brighton Starbucks baristas win their union, joining national surge

Soldiers Field Starbucks is the 22nd in Massachusetts and the 18th in the Boston area where employees have won a union.

Workers at a Brighton Starbucks are the latest to unionize, joining a growing nationwide movement of over 12,000 baristas across 600 locations in the U.S.

Employees at the Brighton Soldiers Field location voted unanimously 9-0 Wednesday to join Starbucks Workers United, the organization announced in a press release. The group has pushed for workplace protections, living wages, workplace respect, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling and staffing.

The Brighton Starbucks is the 22nd Massachusetts location — and the 18th in the Boston area — where employees have won a union. In June, a Charlestown Starbucks and baristas at New York-based Blank Street Coffee also voted to unionize.

Starbucks Workers United baristas have fueled a surge of union election wins since February 2024. Workers United has filed over 100 unfair labor practice charges, accusing Starbucks of reneging on bargaining commitments, perpetrating new labor violations, and failing to resolve previous complaints.

Thousands of baristas across the country have held strikes, staged protests, and hosted over 100 “sip-ins” to push for fair policies on staffing, scheduling, wages, and protections.

“This company has lost sight of what’s important,” said Kayla Kovacs, a barista of three years. “Getting ‘Back to Starbucks’ means putting people who brew the coffee first.”
