‘Brad Pitt and I used to race go-karts,’ recalls Tom Cruise: ‘We would race all night, he’s a very good driver’ | Hollywood News

Actor Tom Cruise, who is gearing up for the release of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, shared an interesting story about Brad Pitt while addressing the audience at CinemaCon. While talking about his plans to see Pitt’s upcoming film F1, he shared that Pitt and he used to race each other in go-karts after interviews and appreciated his contemporary’s skill behind the wheel. “Brad’s got the F1 movie coming out with Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski. I can’t wait to see it this summer, and I am going to be there opening weekend. It’s going to be awesome,” he said.

“It’s great to see Brad driving; he’s a very good driver, believe me. I have raced against him. When we were doing Interview With The Vampire, we used to go and race go-karts against each other. We would finish and then go race go-karts all night, and he was a hell of a driver,” said Cruise.

Tom Cruise shared this anecdote while he was on stage to present Christopher McQuarrie with the director of the year award. He complimented the director and called him his “creative brother” while recalling the many adventures they have had together. One of those adventures happened on the set of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol when writer Brad Bird and actor Simon Pegg, who also wrote for the film, were trying to write the Burj Khalifa stunt.

“I gave him a ride to the set, and as we walked in, Pegg and Bird looked at me confused while thinking, ‘Who’s this guy? We are trying to write a scene’ because I didn’t tell him that he was there to help with the script. So I quickly made all the introductions and explained the scene to McQuarrie and said, ‘Okay, there is a blue light and a red light. The blue means that the gloves are sticking, and the red means I don’t stick,’ and without hesitation, McQuarrie said, ‘So blue is glue and red is dead,’ and then proceeded to write the entire scene that we shot,” shared Cruise.

Tom talked about working with McQ in Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher and Top Gun: Maverick, and how the director also helped with the structure, writing and editing of the Brad Pitt film World War Z. On receiving the award, McQ thanked his family, the studio and the audiences for their support. He thanked Tom separately, saying, “It’s been an honour and a privilege to work with you, to learn from you, and to put you in harm’s way for other people’s entertainment. I love you, brother.”

Cruise’s Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning will hit theatres May 23rd, while Pitt’s F1 will come out on June 27.
