Starting with Dhaula Kuan, the BJP government is planning to decongest key choke points across the national capital to provide a smooth commute to Delhiites.
According to officials, a high-level meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Dharmendra to discuss the plan and a road safety committee was formed to conduct a survey of choked stretches and analyse and find solutions to address the issue.
“There are several choke points across the city which affect other stretches, even in residential colonies. There is at least one such pain point in each district. So, the government is planning to implement a de-congestion plan to resolve the traffic jam issue in the city,” said a senior official.
The road safety committee will comprise officials from the Traffic Police, Transport Department, Delhi Transport Corporation, National Highways Authority of India, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board, and revenue districts, among others.
“The government is planning to begin with the Dhaula Kuan stretch, which is one of the biggest pain points for people travelling from Gurgaon and Delhi. It is an arterial stretch connecting South, Central and West Delhi to the IGI Airport and Gurgaon. It also provides connectivity to Dwarka. During the morning and evening rush hours, it sees traffic jams lasting over an hour,” said an official.
Some of the choke points in this stretch are Shiv Murti, Mahipalpur road and Mahipalpur flyover.
The construction of the Dwarka Expressway has also added to commuters’ woes.

“If a commuter is travelling from Vasant Vihar near Rangpuri, it takes them almost 25-30 minutes to reach Shiv Murti Marg on NH-48 — this stretch is less than a kilometre long. Traffic jams are also common during non-peak hours. So, the government is planning to start the decongestion plan from this stretch,” added the official.
Officials said the committee will soon start work on the ground. “They will visit the stretch for an inspection and analyse why traffic jams are taking place, which are the key points choking traffic movement… After a proper study, they will submit their report along with a solution, which will be given to the executing agency for further action,” said the official.
In 2018-19, around 77 congestion points were identified across the national capital, and Dhaula Kuan was one of them, said an official.
