The Kerala government said it would consider revising the menu of food served at anganwadis in the state after a video of a boy asking for biryani and chicken fry, instead of upma, went viral on social media.
In the video, a boy named Thrajul S Sankar was seen telling his mother: “I want biryani and chicken fry at the anganwadi instead of upma”. His mother recorded the video when he made the request to her while she was feeding him biryani at home. The mother later posted the video on Instagram and it has been widely shared.
It even caught the attention of state Health, Women and Child Welfare Minister Veena George, who said the government would consider revising the menu at anganwadis taking into account the suggestion of Shanku, as Thrajul is fondly known.
“Under this government, a scheme to provide eggs and milk through anganwadis has been successfully implemented. In coordination with the Department of Women and Child Development, local bodies provide a variety of foods in anganwadis,” George said.
Kerala has around 33,000 anganawadis, and in 2022, the state government introduced a scheme to provide milk and eggs to children through anganawadis.
Recently, the state government began the process of converting all anganawadis in the state into smart anganawadis, with study rooms, rest rooms, kitchen, store room, dining room, hall, garden and indoor and outdoor play areas. The state had also revised the wages of anganawadi teachers, 95 per cent of whom are women.
