A man was left seriously injured after a knife attack in Berlin. Police were called to Berlin’s Holocaust memorial after reports of an incident at around 6pm on Friday, February 21, reports PA.

German media claim that the attack was a stabbing. A man was later seen surrendering to officers, though police did not immediately confirm they had arrested a suspect.

There was no immediate indication of a motive for the attack. An Associated Press photographer witnessed a man claiming to be the culprit surrender to officers, but there was no immediate confirmation from police that they had arrested a suspect.

The victim was taken to a hospital, Berlin police said. German newspapers including Tagesspiegel said he was stabbed, citing police sources. Police said they were attending to the witnesses who saw the attack.

Berlin Police said in a tweet: “At around 6pm, a man was seriously injured by an unknown person in the field of stelae at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in #Mitte. The injured man was taken to hospital.

“Rescue workers are on site caring for several people who had to witness the events. Investigations are ongoing at the crime scene. A press collection point will be set up on Behrenstrasse, near Cora-Berliner-Street.”
