A cab driver who robbed luxury items worth Rs 24 lakh from an unlocked car belonging to a morning walker at Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park on May 11 has been arrested by the Bengaluru central division police based on analysis of CCTV footage of the incident, the police said on Saturday.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Raj Mohammed Mastan, 45, a resident of North Bengaluru.

According to the police, the alleged robbery occurred at the Cubbon Park on May 11 after a morning walker who travelled from Koramangala in south-east Bengaluru left her car near the Queens Road bus stop around 8 am without securing the lock of the car.

When the woman, a professional dancer, returned at around 9 am, she found that a bag she had left behind in the car was missing.

In her police complaint, the woman said the bag contained a double-band diamond ring with a solitaire worth ₹ 10 lakh, a diamond ring worth ₹ 4 lakh, a Rolex watch worth ₹9 lakh, a Bottega wallet worth ₹75,000, and airpods worth ₹20,000.

The Bengaluru police tracked down the accused to the Ganesh Block in Mahalaxmi Layout in West Bengaluru on May 13 based on CCTV footage near the crime scene. “The person was interrogated and confessed to the crime,” the police said.

“The accused does not have a prior history of crime. He used the opportunity of seeing the car being parked by the victim without locking to carry out the robbery,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said on Friday.

“It is our request to the public to be wary of valuable goods being stored in cars and to ensure that cars are locked in the event of the car containing valuable items,” the commissioner said.
