Alex Jones has confirmed she will be returning to The One Show after a “heart-breaking” end to her summer break, which saw her family’s kitten Sabrina seriously injured after being hit by a car. The Welsh presenter shared the emotional update from the Lake District, where she and her family took a delayed break on the advice of celebrity vet Noel Fitzpatrick, who stepped in to treat Sabrina’s broken pelvis.

Despite the trauma, Alex said her kitten had undergone surgery and was now recovering, adding in a video posted on Instagram: “Back on the show tomorrow.”

The One Show returns this week following its summer hiatus, with Alex back on the sofa alongside co-host JB Gill at 7pm on BBC One. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

Explaining what had happened earlier in the week, Alex also told her followers: “We think our gorgeous little kitten, Sabrina, was hit by a car yesterday evening but despite breaking her pelvis, she managed to crawl back to the house to tell us that she was hurt.”

Following an initial night of emergency care, Sabrina was transferred to Professor Noel Fitzpatrick’s specialist veterinary facility for further treatment.

Describing the Supervet star as “the light at the end of a pretty scary 24 hours,” Alex praised his swift intervention and thanked him for his care and support during what she described as a traumatising time for her young family.

In a lakeside video shared from the Lake District, Alex told followers that Sabrina had undergone surgery and was now in recovery, though it would be a long road ahead.

She explained that Noel had advised them to still go on their trip, noting: “We were due to come to the Lake District the middle of last week and obviously all of this happened, but we did eventually make it.

“Noel said, you know, she needs to stay with me anyway so you might as well go, because the kids were traumatised by the whole thing and disappointed – so we did come, and I’m so glad.”

The One Show has been on TV for 19 years, and airs from Monday to Friday.

Alex has co-presented the show since 2010, initially partnering with Matt Baker and has since worked with various co-hosts including Jermaine Jenas and Ronan Keatin.

It seems she has no plans of quitting any time soon, as she told Bella magazine in 2024: “I can’t even believe I’m still there.

“I just go in, do the job and hope no one notices I’m still there. I just love it.

“People ask a lot: ‘What do you want to do next? Don’t you want to do a big entertainment show?’ I’m like: ‘What do you mean?’ I’m really happy.

“All new projects are exciting and a new challenge but actually it would be really amiss of anybody to overlook the bread and butter,” Alex added.

“All the extra bits are really fun and exciting but actually for me longevity is key. I want to be there. Being the main breadwinner, I want to be able to provide security for the children.”
